Tata Conglomerate - Suggested way ahead

Visit blogadda.com to discover Indian blogs

Without doubting the credentials of the next Chairman of Tata Sons, he/she would need to begin by heeding the concerns of the two principal Trusts - the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust and Sir Ratan Tata Trust, with regard to the conglomerate as a whole, and more specifically, the new businesses launched under the present Chairman's watch - such as e-commerce, aviation, and semiconductors.

Mr. Chandrasekaran's credentials were indeed impeccable - especially where his contribution to the "cash cow" of Tata Group - Tata Consultancy Services was concerned. Furthermore, no one can doubt his concerns with regard to the businesses launched under his watch, and perhaps his attempts to address the same.

His successor needs to align the independent boards of all the 26 listed Tata group companies, with the Tata Sons board, without in any way attempting to dilute their respective autonomies. Specifically, Tata Sons board would need to shepherd the boards of those group companies, which are falling short of expectations of the Tata Sons board, and lend all possible support to enable them be a force to reckon with, in their respective industries.

Here, TCS can be entrusted with the responsibility to create an IT infrastructure for the corporate governance of conglomerate as a whole. The objective should be to record each constituent company's board structure, the credentials of all the board members, the various committees and their composition, agenda of each board meeting and deliberations thereafter, contributions of the respective board members during board meetings, and finally the contributions of the various committees of those boards. These need to be correlated with the challenges being faced by the respective companies, and the effectiveness of those boards to address the same in a time bound manner.

Such IT infrastructure could then summarize the same for each group company, and present the same to the Tata Sons board. Such feedbacks could form the key inputs for deliberations at Tata Sons board level. Subsequently, direct communications with the boards of such lagging companies could be established to identify the key support required to effect the expected turnarounds at those companies. Important learnings from the board level deliberations of well performing companies, can also enable cross-learnings within the conglomerate as a whole.

Finally, the conventional wisdom - "human resources are the most important assets of any organization", will hold true irrespective of advances in the field of Artificial Intelligence and allied technologies. Hence, CHROs at each of the group companies, need to be given the right importance at the board level, to ensure that more than one million headcounts of the Tata group, are indeed their most important assets who have the required dedication and loyalty to make this conglomerate an ideal employer, besides a well respected market-leader, wherever it's present. 😊

Some suggestions for Mr. Tewolde Gebremariam, Air India's newly appointed CEO & MD

Barely a year after the terrible crash of AI 171 off Ahmedabad, came yet another shocker for Air India patrons. An Air India flight (AI2379) from Phuket to New Delhi dropped nearly 300 feet mid-air due to severe turbulence on August 4, 2026. The sudden plunge injured 17 people (13 passengers and 4 crew members), who were hospitalized upon a safe landing in Delhi . Some of them described it as nothing short of a "re-birth".

While the turbulence was well beyond anyone's control, yet one wonders at the bare minimum, whether or not not the same could have been preempted in that route, and whether or not some proactive measures could have been taken by the pilots, to prevent such a steep fall?

Well, Mr. Tewolde Gebremariam, has a gigantic challenge upon his arrival- and that is, of battling the immense negative trust factor or perception, among the flyers, where Air India is concerned, especially more so, after the latest fiasco.

Before joining Air India, he spent nearly 37 years with Ethiopian Airlines, including 11 years as Group CEO, transforming it into Africa's largest and most successful airline group.

Quite rightly, he would drawing upon his huge wealth of such experience in turning around Air India now, yet it would be ideal, if he devotes all his energies in doing what ever it takes, to ensure top-of-the line pilot training to handle such emergency situations, and top-of-the line fleet maintenance to ensure that the planes are able to withstand such adverse weather conditions, especially on such challenging routes.

Then the use of the latest technologies - especially predictive analytics and Artificial Intelligence software, tailored for requirements of Civil Aviation, would greatly supplement efforts of his team in Air India, to ensure top -of-the line safety standards of this airline.

It is assumed that Boeing, the aircraft vendor, is a reliable partner, where such efforts are concerned.

Furthermore, it would be a worthwhile on his part, to forge alliances with other leading international airlines with impeccable safety standards, to share best practices, where pilot training and aircraft maintenance protocls are concerned.

And on an ongoing basis, Mr. Tewolde Gebremariam, could establish communication with his loyal patrons, via various communication channels, including WhatsApp, to gauge any shortfalls, where their experience and expectations are concerned. Most importantly, communicate 'Action Taken Reports' on their feedbacks to them, to re-build their confidence in Air India.

With such measures, there is no doubt that Mr. Tewolde Gebremariam, would transform Air India, into a "Maharaja" for the international flyers. 😊 👍
